Enby Meaning™ Media is a queer and non-binary culture publication. This page says what we hold ourselves to, so you can judge our work and hold us to it.

Our promises #

  • We tell the truth as best we can find it, and we fix our mistakes in public.
  • We separate reporting from opinion and label each.
  • We never take money to change what we say, and we label every ad, affiliate link and sponsorship.
  • We use people's own names, pronouns and words for themselves.
  • We protect the people who trust us with their stories.
  • We say when we do not know something.

What we cover and who we write for #

We cover queer and non-binary identity, community, health and wellbeing, culture and media, and the wider world. We write from inside the communities we cover, and we are not neutral about people's right to exist as they are. We still hold our reporting to the same standard of accuracy as anyone else's.

Accuracy #

  • We check facts against primary sources where we can, such as documents, official data, the original study or the person involved.
  • We link to our sources so you can check them.
  • We say which claims are reported, which are opinion and which are our analysis.
  • When we are not sure, we say so, or we leave the claim out.

Corrections and updates #

When we get something wrong, we fix it and say so.

  • Small errors (a typo, a wrong date, a mislabelled photo) are fixed, with a dated note at the bottom of the piece.
  • Significant errors are fixed with a dated note at the top that says what was wrong.
  • We do not quietly change what a piece means. If we update a story because new facts came in, we say when and why.

To report an error, email hello@enbymeaning.com with the subject "Correction" and a link to the piece. We reply within five working days.

Sources and anonymity #

We name sources whenever we can. We grant anonymity when someone could face harm for speaking, and only when we know who they are and why they need it. We tell readers when a source is anonymous and why.

We do not currently offer a secure or encrypted way to send us information. Email and our forms pass through Squarespace and Google. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle tips and what we cannot promise.

Language and respect #

  • We use the names and pronouns people use for themselves.
  • We do not deadname people, or use someone's former name, unless the person has said it is fine or it is essential to a story and we have thought hard about the harm.
  • We describe people instead of labelling them, and we put the person first before a condition or label where that is how they describe themselves.
  • We do not treat anyone's identity as a debate. We do cover arguments, laws and policies about identity, and we cover them accurately.
  • We avoid stereotypes and "both sides" framing where one side is denying people's existence.
  • We take care with health, mental health, violence and suicide. We follow safe-reporting practice and, where it helps, point to support.

People we write about #

We do not out anyone. We take extra care with children and teenagers, people in crisis, and people who did not choose to be public. If someone asks us to change or remove something about them, we consider it seriously and weigh it against the public interest and accuracy.

Independence and money #

  • Ads, affiliate links and sponsors do not decide what we cover or what we say. Advertisers and sponsors do not see or approve our editorial work before it runs.
  • We label sponsored and partner content as such, at the top of the piece and in any social post that shares it.
  • We tag affiliate links, and posts with them say so. Our Disclosures page has the details.
  • We turn down sponsors and partners we would not otherwise cover.
  • If we receive a free product, ticket, trip or review copy, we say so in the piece.

Conflicts of interest #

If we have a personal, financial or professional link to someone or something we cover, we say so in the piece, or we do not cover it. We do not review the work of close friends or partners without saying so.

Reviews and criticism #

Reviews are opinions, based on our own experience of the work. We say where we got it. Free access never buys a good review, and we say when we have been given something.

Images and credits #

We credit photographers, artists and sources. We use images of albums, films and artwork to review and criticise them, and we credit the owners. If we use images that are not our own, we label and credit them. Many images on our site come from the Unsplash Stock Library, an online platform that provides millions of free-to-use photographs.

How we use AI #

People write what we publish. We do not publish AI-written articles as our work. We don't use AI to invent quotes, sources, facts, or people. Our most commonly used tool is Grammarly, which supports our editorial team. Grammarly started adding AI Writing Assistance features between 2023 and 2026. Although our team uses Grammarly to flag and highlight grammatical errors, we do not use generative AI tools in written comments. We check everything before and after it goes into Grammarly to ensure accuracy and true authorship.

Furthermore our team uses Ubersuggest, an SEO tool that enables our team to perform keyword research, analyse competitors, and complete site audits. Like many businesses globally, Ubersuggest has implemented AI tools into its keyword search functionality. AI may be used when performing searches via Ubersuggest; we do not oversee its functionality. Again, this does not involve manipulating the content we create or write; we use it only as a tool for SEO research and tracking.

Reader contributions and comments #

Comments follow our Community Guidelines. We read and moderate them, but we do not edit what people write to change its meaning. Tips, pitches and submissions are handled under our Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions.

Reviewing this policy #

We review this policy at least once a year, and when our practices change. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
