Taimi LGBTQ+ Dating & Meetup App Review: Is it a Good Dating App for Enbies?

The short version on Taimi

  • Best for: queer people who want a decent list of identity options, an LGBTQ+-only space, and who don’t mind an app that’s half dating, half social network.

  • Keep in mind: the paywalls and upsells. Billing is still the most common complaint in Taimi’s reviews, so we won’t ignore it; read the pricing section below.

  • Our take: a good identity-and-privacy toolkit attached to a pushy business model. Worth trying free.

This review is part of our wider guide, Best Dating Apps for Non-Binary People (2026), where we review Taimi alongside other major dating apps for non-binary people.

Let’s be straight about the business. In online dating, you’re the product. Every app wants you swiping, and you’re a small part of a bigger revenue model. Taimi is no different. But 21st-century dating is online, and it isn’t going anywhere. So we’d rather back LGBTQ+-focused businesses that are trying to do better by gender-diverse people than some of the mainstream apps, and still tell you where they fall short. That’s what this review does. This is a sponsored post, and Taimi paid for it, but that doesn’t change what we say.

Here’s the longer, less tidy version on Taimi.

    What the Taimi app is

Taimi launched in 2017 in Las Vegas as an app for gay men, was redesigned in 2020, and expanded to the whole queer community by 2022, according to its Wikipedia entry. That history matters: some of the app's defaults and reader complaints trace back to its gay-men's-app roots, so it's worth checking your profile settings after you sign up.

Appflame owns it and also runs the dating app Hily. Co-founder Jake Vygnan told Tech.eu in August 2026 that the company has never raised outside investment and is profitable. That's a company statement, not an audit.

On size, the numbers measure different things:

    • Taimi's site claims 40 million-plus users in 138 countries.

    • Wikipedia cites more than 25 million registered users as of 2024.

    • Tech.eu reports almost 350,000 daily active users, per the company.

Registered accounts, total users, and daily users aren’t the same thing. The daily figure indicates how busy your local feed is likely to be. Taimi hasn't published a count of non-binary users that we could find. The company says its biggest audience is lesbian users, with strength among trans users too.

    How Taimi handles non-binary identity

This is the section most of our readers care about, so we'll be specific about what we could and couldn't confirm on Taimi.

    Gender

Taimi lists five top-level gender categories (man, woman, trans man, trans woman, non-binary). You can select one and move on, or select one and optionally choose from 13 sub-options:

    • Man: cis man, trans man, intersex

    • Woman: cis woman, trans woman, intersex

    • Trans man: transmasculine, multigender, genderfluid, bigender, polygender, intersex

    • Trans woman: transfeminine, multigender, genderfluid, bigender, polygender, intersex

    • Non-binary: transmasculine, transfeminine, bigender, genderfluid, two-spirit, agender, intersex

We understand why Taimi uses top-level categories: they simplify matching. But outside man and woman, all of gender diversity ends up in three buckets with sub-options, and that doesn't reflect the community. You can be a trans man and non-binary. Non-binary people can be trans even if they don't use the word. Fitting that range into fixed categories is limiting, and so are the options themselves.

In our testing, you can change the sub-option of your gender identity in the app's settings, but not your top-level category. Changing that seems to require contacting support or deleting your account and starting over. That's hard on people who haven't publicly transitioned yet, or are partway through, and it treats gender as fixed instead of something that can change over a lifetime.

Taimi isn't unusual here. Most dating apps manage these categories tightly so their matching works. But Taimi says it wants to be more inclusive and has made real efforts, so it should take this feedback on board.

    Pronouns

Taimi has told the press it offers 12 pronoun choices, and that checks out: nine pronoun sets (He/Him, She/Her, They/Them, He/She, He/They, She/He, She/They, They/He, They/She) plus three alternatives (“Use my name”, “All accepted” and “Ask me”). There's no option for neopronouns, though. You can also put your gender identity and pronouns in your bio, but we'd like to see neopronouns in the pronoun choices too. Putting pronouns in the bio, not the pronoun field, makes them feel like an afterthought.

    Sexual Orientation

Taimi features eight options: bisexual, pansexual, queer, lesbian, gay, demisexual, asexual and straight. After a 2024 partnership with GLAAD, you can select more than one. As with gender and pronouns, we'd like to see the list grow.

    Taimi’s “Finder” tool

Taimi says its “Finder” tool matches people on sexuality, gender identity and interests. The limits in the categories above probably reflect what the tool can handle. We hope Taimi finds better ways to match people so you can easily list your gender identity, pronouns, and orientation on your profile, without waiting on a support request to change them.

    Reality check for enbies

Apps change these lists often, so treat our numbers as a snapshot from October 2026 and check the in-app options yourself. Reviewers have also been mixed. In an Autostraddle group review, one tester objected to being pushed to choose between “female” and “transgender female” for her profile, and said choosing no gender didn't work. Readers in the comments said the app defaulted them to gay men. That review may predate recent updates, but it's a fair warning to check your settings.

    Privacy and safety on Taimi

For our community, privacy matters as much as identity options. Being outed to the wrong person is a real risk, and Taimi offers strong privacy tools.

This is where we feel Taimi shines most compared with other dating apps. Many of the privacy tools Taimi includes in its freemium model are paywalled on mainstream apps. Yes, Taimi has its own paywalled features users can’t access, but we appreciate that its privacy and safety features remain accessible to all users.

    • Incognito ("stealth") mode: Taimi says you can browse invisibly and share your data only with people you've liked.

    • Screenshot blocking: profiles block screenshots, which Taimi says helps prevent harassment and outing.

    • Disguised app icon: you can swap the icon for a generic one, per Tech.eu.

    • Verification badge: verified users get a badge. Taimi's own safety guide admits verified accounts can still behave badly and should be reported.

    • Reporting and blocking: report from the three dots on a profile, and block messages and calls from people who ignore your boundaries.

    • Human support: Taimi says its support desk is staffed 24/7 by people, not bots.

Moderation is largely automated, and Taimi says staff don't read private messages. That's good for privacy, but it means reporting matters. The company's Safety Tips page says plainly that no system catches everything, and its advice is sound: keep early chats on the app, suggest a video call before meeting, choose a busy public place for a first date, and tell someone where you'll be.

What you actually get in the Taimi app

Taimi is more than a swipe deck:

    • Finder: an AI-based tool that suggests mutual matches. Taimi says it's available on the free version.

    • Instant Chat: message someone before you've matched. They choose whether to reply.

    • Private cards: share photos, videos and thoughts only with people you've given permission.

    • Explore: connect with people in other cities.

    • Taimi In Person: events that bring people together offline.

    • Social feed and live streams: reviewers describe it as "Facebook, Instagram and Tinder all in one".

    • AI Dating Assistant: per its App Store listing, a built-in assistant that can automatically like profiles and send first messages for you.

Reality check: the AI tools deserve a pause. Some Trustpilot reviewers say they were surprised to find likes and messages going out that they hadn't sent, and the company says this comes from optional AI features accidentally turned on. For many users who are wary of AI tools everywhere, this may be a turn-off. Luckily, you can turn these AI features off for now. If you want to control exactly who you talk to and how you're described, check that setting before you do anything else. Reviewers also complained about alerts when someone views your profile or is nearby, so check your notification and location settings early on, too.

    Taimi’s Pricing and the Paywall

Joining is free, and you can use the base app at no cost. Premium comes in three tiers: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Taimi's site says premium unlocks more features. The App Store listing mentions premium filters, seeing your visitors, unlimited likes, profile preferences and a custom location. When premium tiers launched in 2021, they cost $4.99 USD (Bronze) to $9.99 USD (Gold), per Global Dating Insights.

Prices today are less clear, vary by country, and change with sales through the year. From our search of the US and NZ App Stores and Google Play, most subscriptions run weekly, monthly or quarterly. Google Play prices in NZ ranged from $17.99 NZD to $84.99 NZD per month, and the US App Store lists in-app purchases from $0.99 to $34.99 USD without stating durations. Check the price and the billing period on the screen before you tap.

Reality check: users complain most about money. On Trustpilot, Taimi has a 3.6/5 score from 616 reviews. Reviews are self-selected and unverified, but recurring themes include high subscription costs, features locked behind higher tiers, auto-renewing plans and fake profiles. Plenty of reviewers praise customer support. If you subscribe, set a reminder to review it, and manage cancellation through your Apple or Google subscription settings.

What users say about the Taimi app

    • App Store: 4.4 out of 5 from 215,000+ ratings (as of October 2026). The app is rated 18+.

    • Google Play: 3.6 out of 5 from 199,000+ ratings (as of October 2026). The app is rated 18+.

    • Trustpilot: 3.6 out of 5 from 616 reviews, 69% of them five-star and 16% one-star. Self-selected, so read it as a mood, not a measurement.

    • Autostraddle: three queer women tested it with mixed results. They liked the sleek design, diverse users and video posts. They disliked the notifications, photo rejections, and gender settings. One said she matched with several people and started conversations that "could be going somewhere".

The App Store score sits well above Google Play and Trustpilot, so the full picture is closer to “mixed” than “loved”. The pattern is familiar for a big dating app: people who find it useful tend to love it, and people who feel upsold or botted talk about it loudly.

    Who is Taimi best for

    A good fit if you:

    • want an LGBTQ+-only space rather than a general app with inclusive features bolted on

    • care about privacy tools like incognito mode, screenshot blocking and a disguised icon

    • like events, video, and a social feed alongside matching

    • live in or near a big city, where the pool is deeper

    Look elsewhere if you:

    • want a small, slow, text-first community

    • want a relationship-focused app with minimal upsells

    • aren't comfortable with automation and subscription tiers

Setting up Taimi as a non-binary person

    1. Pick your gender category and sub-option, then check how it shows on your profile. The top-level category is hard to change later, so choose carefully.

    2. Add your pronouns using the pronoun field and in your bio.

    3. Select every orientation that applies. Multi-select is available.

    4. Turn on incognito mode and screenshot blocking if you want them.

    5. Check the AI Dating Assistant setting and switch it off unless you want it.

    6. Review notification and location settings.

    7. Read the price and the billing period before you subscribe.

    8. Report and block early. You don't owe anyone an education.

    Taimi

Best for LGBTQ+-centred dating that carries into real life

Taimi is built for the whole LGBTQ+ community, and non-binary people are meant to be a core part of it, not a dropdown tacked on afterwards. Worth knowing: it launched in 2017 as an app for gay men and has widened since, so give your profile setup a proper look and check your settings reflect you.

    Why Taimi works

    • Five gender categories, with sub-options for non-binary members
    • Orientation options that go well beyond gay, straight and bi, and you can pick more than one
    • LGBTQ+-centred community
    • Inclusive matching filters
    • In-person events that bring people together offline

Taimi says it offers a stealth mode so you can stay invisible if you choose, plus verification and anti-catfish measures, and it publishes safety tips for first dates and online dates on its Safety Tips page.

    Reality check

How many matches you get, and how good they are, depends on your region. Taimi is also part dating app, part social network (posts, live streams, nearby alerts), which some people love, and others find a lot. It runs on a freemium model, so check what sits behind the paywall before you get attached, and look at your notification and location settings early.

    Best used for

People who want LGBTQ+-inclusive dating and the option to build connections both in-app and in person.

    What does "Sponsored" mean here?

Taimi paid Enby Meaning for this placement. That buys the premium position and a link. It doesn't buy a pass on honesty: we agreed to partner with them, we edit sponsored copy, keep our own reality check, and may change or remove a listing if the company's ownership, safety or policies change.
